Beyond the seven Sacraments we’ve examined (Baptism, Confirmation, Eucharist, Reconciliation, Anointing of the Sick, Marriage, and Holy Orders), there are other sacred signs and actions in which a blessing is conferred. Some of these are objects, particular prayers, or even ceremonies which have a sacred character but are not themselves sacraments. [Read more…] about YouCat: Other Liturgical Celebrations
In the first few posts about YouCat, we saw that we have been created to exist in relationship with God, that He’s given us the ability to hear His voice, and He makes the first step towards us. The question is, how do we answer? Simply put, this response is what we call faith. “To respond to God means to believe in Him.” (YouCat 20)
“In many ways God seeks contact with us. In every human encounter, in every moving experience of nature, in every apparent coincidence, in very challenge, every suffering, there is a hidden message from God to us… He addresses us as friends. Therefore we, too, should respond as friends and believe Him, trust Him completely, learn to understand Him better and bettrer, and accept His will without reservation.” -YouCat 20
That’s asking a lot of us: it’s asking us to put ourselves into His hands. [Read more…] about YouCat: We Respond to God
It’s been a little more than twelve years since I got my first cell phone – the Motorola Microtac 650 (it was anything but micro.) I remember two things about this phone: first, that it was practically indestructible (it survived full submersion in a bucket of water and still worked well), and secondly that the reception was very finicky. In the 18 months I had that phone, I dropped hundreds of calls, usually while driving on the highway and cruising through the valley. And these analog networks (things like 3G, 4G, and LTE weren’t even part of the conversation yet) had decent coverage in major cities like Edmonton and Calgary… but the rest of Alberta was hit and miss. The key to using your phone was making sure that you were in a place that you had reception [Read more…] about YouCat: Man is Receptive to God
When people think of me, the last thing they think of is someone who is “smooth.” Consider me the anti-James Bond. When I first asked my now-wife out on a date, I said “We should …talk… sometime.” (I used to get really nervous and unsure of what to say around girls I liked.) Thankfully, she said yes, not because I’m smooth, but because she liked me. When I took her out on our first date, I made sure I had showered, triple-applied deodorant, and borrowed my roommates shirt (which is something guys never do.) I was terrified of acting like an idiot whenever I was around her, but as our relationship grew, my life changed. I began to try to find as much time for her as I could. As time progressed from dating through engagement and now into our marriage, we continue to work through the ups and downs of getting along in a healthy relationship.
Prayer is very much a relationship. [Read more…] about Prayer as Relationship
