Mark 8 begins with Jesus again miraculously feeding a large crowd (~400o people) using only seven loaves of bread (Mark 8:1-10). While last time (Mark 6:33-44), he feed them from compassion, this time He feeds people who have followed Him for three days without any care for themselves. It shows us how Jesus [Read more…] about Unfolding Scripture: Mark 8
I had the privilege of sharing a study on the Gospel of Mark with a group of students at one of my high schools. To set the stage for this study, I began by giving them an overview of the Bible as well as three claims Catholics place on what we read in Scripture. Here’s the second half of that conversation, completing what I said about what the Bible is & where it came from.
What do Catholics believe about the Bible?
When we make the sign of the Cross, we pray in the name of the Father, of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. And while sometimes it’s easy to see the Father – He who created all things out of love and who sits on the throne, and we can find a multitude of images of Jesus depicting His birth, death & resurrection, and everything in between… the Holy Spirit seems a little more mysterious. We have a variety of images in scripture such as the dove which descended on Christ at His Baptism or the tongues of fire which inspired the Apostles at Pentecost… but when we speak of the Holy Spirit dwelling within us, it just seems a little bit abstract. But the Holy Spirit is the third person of the Trinity, whom the Nicene Creed affirms we are to worship and glorify alongside the Father and the Son: [Read more…] about YouCat: I Believe in the Holy Spirit
In the first few posts about YouCat, we saw that we have been created to exist in relationship with God, that He’s given us the ability to hear His voice, and He makes the first step towards us. The question is, how do we answer? Simply put, this response is what we call faith. “To respond to God means to believe in Him.” (YouCat 20)
“In many ways God seeks contact with us. In every human encounter, in every moving experience of nature, in every apparent coincidence, in very challenge, every suffering, there is a hidden message from God to us… He addresses us as friends. Therefore we, too, should respond as friends and believe Him, trust Him completely, learn to understand Him better and bettrer, and accept His will without reservation.” -YouCat 20
That’s asking a lot of us: it’s asking us to put ourselves into His hands. [Read more…] about YouCat: We Respond to God
Eight and a half years ago, as she stood by her car on a busy Edmonton street (politely waiting for me to say good-bye), I stammered to the woman who would someday become my wife “We should talk, sometime.” Gratefully, it was the last time I would ask a girl out on a first date (that’s what I was trying to say to her) – and even more thankfully, she said yes when I later arranged to take her to dinner. A few things are important for this to have been successful:
1. Jen needed to be free and able to respond (if someone asked her out on a date now, she wouldn’t be free nor able to respond, as she is spoken for.)
2. I needed to take the first step and ask her out.
3. She needed to say ‘yes.’ (Which she did, and I am ridiculously blessed because of it.) [Read more…] about YouCat: God Approaches Us
